Implementing a comprehensive performance management and quality improvement training curriculum for a state health department

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is funding the National Public Health Improvement Initiative (NPHII) which supports State, Territorial, Local, and Tribal Health Departments in promoting and facilitating the practice of performance management and quality improvement. As a NPHII grant recipient, the New York State Department of Health's (NYSDOH) Performance Management Group utilizes a blended learning approach to bring the concepts of Performance Management and Quality Improvement into organizational practice. This session will provide an interactive introduction to both online and ‘stand-up' or ‘instructor-led' components of the curriculum. Participants will also be shown how to access the online portion of NYSDOH's training curriculum. Public Health practitioners, who work in Health Departments that are interested in pursuing national accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB), will leave the session with knowledge that is applicable to addressing standards and measures that are required in the Public Health accreditation process.

Learning Objectives:
Identify online training opportunities that can be used by public health practitioners to address their performance management and quality improvement needs. Describe the process by which participants can take advantage of online training modules. Discuss the components of a Performance Management/Quality Improvement training curriculum for state or local health departments. Formulate a plan for assessing the useage and impact of a training curriculum using functionality of an enterprise Learning Management System.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: Currently, I assist with the planning and implementation of performance improvement projects, and play an intricate role in the development of training opportunities related to performance management and quality improvement (PM/QI). I am also heavily involved in the Department’s accreditation readiness efforts. I hold an MPH in Health Policy and Management.
