Learning Objectives:
Assess: Assess ministers’ perceptions of depression and the feasibility of utilizing church-based programs to provide evidence-based assessments and treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
Describe: Focus groups are an effective tool in qualitative research method for investigating complex behaviors and can help identify emerging issues for intervention planning. This study currently conducts focus groups with ministers from one of the largest black churches in the U.S.A. to learn their perspectives of depression and the feasibility of implementing church-based programs for MDD.
Identify: This study will identify if having mental health professionals collaborate with ministers in a church-based service setting to provide assessments is deemed best practices to improving care and protecting community members’ confidentiality.
Demonstrate: Providing Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy (G-IPT), free of charge, to depressed congregant members in a church setting could potentially address many of their impediments to depression treatment. Moreover, providing group psychotherapy in a church setting could be viewed as extending a culturally accepted role of the church and serve as a way to educate parishioners about the symptoms of depression.
Evaluate: This study will be evaluated by surveys distributed in the church setting and also amongst medical professionals

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I am principal investigator of a NARSAD Young Investigator Award that provided funding to implement an evidence-based depression treatment in a large, African American church. I have also chaired a symposium, focused on the role of faith-based organizations in reducing racial disparities in mental health treatment, at an international psychiatric conference.
