Changing the guard: A novel approach to lay health education

Monday, November 4, 2013

Miranda Holloway, BS , Public Health Practice, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL
Historically, underserved populations have been disenfranchised from health education and promotion services. In an effort to reduce educational barriers that continue to promote health disparities amongst at-risk populations, health efforts have shifted towards culturally-competent health education sessions.

The project aims to increase community members' awareness and knowledge about diabetes education and prevention. The diabetes education sessions will be conducted by adolescents ages 12-17. They will be the voice of those who are unable to speak. They will be health advocates to those in their families that have this debilitating disease.

In addition, an evaluation will be conducted to measure change in awareness and knowledge including a better understanding of diabetes prevention approaches and intentions to educate family members and friends at risk. By galvanizing community support, communities may become more empowered to improve their health status using youth community health workers.
