Wednesday, November 6, 2013

Laurence Fuortes, MD, MS , Occupational Environmental Health, University of Iowa, College of Public Health, Iowa City, IA
EEOICPA represents a major advance in workers' compensation in promoting the recognition and compensation of chronic occupational diseases among former Department of Energy (DOE) workers on a nationwide basis. However, implementation of the program by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has been inconsistent and frequently problematic for such cases. The experience of one Former Worker Program in detecting occupational lung disease and assisting claimants will be presented through several emblematic cases. Denied claims for pneumoconiosis will be reviewed. Chronic beryllium lung disease screening, diagnosis and management among workers whose most recent exposure occurred decades ago will be discussed.
