Systematic reviews are widely recognized as the best means of synthesizing clinical research; however traditional approaches can be costly and time-consuming, and the results may be difficult to interpret in a meaningful way in order to make research recommendations or clinical decisions about implementation. In order to bridge this gap, Samueli Institute created the Scientific Evaluation and Review of Claims in Healing (SEaRCH) by offering a scientifically rigorous, systematic, and streamlined method for evaluating claims of therapies, practices or products for treating disease and improving health. The Rapid Evidence Assessment of the Literature (REAL©) is a segment of SEaRCH. The REAL methodology was designed to streamline the systematic review process without compromising quality. The REAL process provides an independent “snapshot” of the literature to (1) provide up-to-date, objective, high quality information on healing practices, products, programs and policies; and (2) determine the current evidence for effectiveness of the practice or treatment in a timely, cost-effective and meaningful way. This presentation will provide an overview of this research framework and how it ties into the other segments of SEaRCH processes to identify effective, affordable healing practices to improve individual and public health in a scientifically rigorous, systematic and streamlined method. We will share how the REAL has been utilized by a variety of organizations posing research questions. Using this streamlined system allows for the facilitation of recommendations on appropriate next steps in policy, funding, research and clinical and field decisions in a timely and cost-effective manner.
Learning Areas:
Public health or related research
Learning Objectives:
Describe the need for methodology that SEaRCH offers to the CAM/IM field using the Rapid Evidence Assessment of the Literature process
Explain an overview of the research framework for REAL
Demonstrate how the REAL process has be utilized in research to answer research questions
Discuss how REAL ties into the other SEaRCH segments to develop the right research question, evaluate the literature, determine readiness for research, and come to consensus around next steps needed for research and/or appropriateness for clinical practice.

Presenting author's disclosure statement:Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: Cindy Crawford is the head of the Systematic Review Program at Samueli Institute. She developed the rapid evidence assessment of the literature (REAL) process that is implemented and taught at Samueli Institute. Cindy has developed the curriculum and offers Introduction to Systematic Review workshops in how to conduct a systematic review using strict methodological criteria and process that she has developed and streamlined. She is author on over 15 systematic reviews published in peer-reviewed journals.
