New paradigms in global health education and curriculum delivery

Global health was identified by the Institute of Medicine as a ‘critical new area' for public health education over a decade ago. Since that time we have seen an exponential growth in the global health curriculum being delivered and on the number of students wanting to experience global health first hand. The vast number of students desiring global health experience has challenged universities, faculty and students themselves to identify global health opportunities, finance global health opportunities and to then produce some ‘outcome' such as capstone projects, theses, publishable articles, grants etc., from these global health experiences. As online and distance education expands the resources to support and manage global health opportunities and students must seek new paradigms of discourse. This session will explore how faculty and students can better utilize established NGOs to facilitate global health opportunities and engagement with local and global partners. The idea of student development, project management and collaboration with partners outside the university will be explored as a solution to the expanding desire and need for global health projects and international placements.
