Academic health department (AHD) learning community: Strengthening public health through collaboration

Tuesday, November 5, 2013 : 4:30 PM - 4:50 PM

C. William Keck, MD, MPH , Department of Family and Community Medicine, Northeast Ohio Medical University, Rootstown, OH
Kathleen Amos, MLIS , Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, Public Health Foundation, Washington, DC
Academic health department (AHD) partnerships, formed by the formal affiliation of health departments and academic health professions institutions, represent a significant opportunity for contributing to the development of an effective public health workforce. By linking public health practice more closely and more collaboratively with academia, these partnerships can serve to enhance education and training for public health professionals, research to target public health services, and the delivery of those services.

To support the adoption of this model within the public health system, the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice established the Academic Health Department Learning Community in January 2011. This national community connects practitioners, educators, and researchers to engage in collaborative learning, knowledge exchange, and resource development to further the creation, maintenance, and expansion of AHDs. Through meetings and online discussion, community members are able to build relationships, explore current issues related to AHDs, share their experiences, learn from the experiences of others, and identify ways to apply new knowledge in practice.

During this interactive session, an in-person meeting of the AHD Learning Community will be held. This will provide an opportunity for AHD Learning Community members and others to come together to learn more about AHDs and the AHD Learning Community from public health professionals active in this area. Elements of the AHD model and examples of AHD activities will be described, and successful AHD partnerships will be highlighted. Participants will interact with colleagues interested in the AHD model and will be encouraged to ask questions and share their experiences, success stories, and challenges related to AHDs. Activities, strengths, and benefits of the AHD Learning Community will be discussed, as will resources that support AHDs. Both current and prospective members of the AHD Learning Community are welcome to attend.
