School nursing models around the world: Lessons learned

With the increased focus on health care reform, new models of care need to be identified. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the results of a study that looked at different models of school nursing used around the world, with particular focus of the Scottish system. A systematic review of the literature included articles, official government documents, and reports from international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Interviews and observations were conducted to gain further insight into how school health services are delivered. Due to budget cuts a few years ago, the model of how nurses in the schools addressed health care needs changed. Public health nurses, in combination with school personnel work together to meet the needs of the students. As we face budget constraints and new models of care here in the US, it is important to learn of other models of school nursing in the world.
