Strategies to Address Prescription Drug Misuse and Abuse

According to the 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 6.1 million persons (aged 12 and over) reported nonmedical use of a psychotherapeutic in the past month – second only to reported marijuana use. Nonmedical use of pain relievers made up the largest portion of that population, or 4.5 million people. Dr. Clark will focus on the trends and risk factors regarding prescription drug misuse/abuse based on the NSDUH, Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), and Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS). He will also discuss SAMHSA's role regarding treatment with methadone and buprenorphine and will overview effective policies and activities to reduce/eliminate diversion.
