Expanding the impact of foreign assistance through public-private alliances: A model for global roll-out of life-saving interventions

Monday, November 4, 2013 : 8:45 AM - 9:00 AM

Lily Kak, PhD , Office of Health, Infectious Diseases and Nutrition, USAID, Washington, DC
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) recognizes the vital role of public-private alliances in achieving transformational development goals. Global Development Alliances (GDAs) significantly expand and deepen the impact of development assistance by linking U.S. foreign assistance with the resources, expertise, innovation, and creativity of private sector partners - corporations, professional associations, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). These alliances have redefined the way USAID does business, shifting away from the traditional client-vendor relationship to welcoming the private sector and professional associations as full and equal partners in development.

This presentation will share USAID's experience in rolling out key life-saving health interventions through the GDA model. Examples will include the roll-out of a basic newborn resuscitation program in over 50 countries through the Helping Babies Breathe GDA and the replication of the model in the Survive and Thrive GDA to roll out other high impact interventions in partnership with regional and national professional associations.
