Value of Public Health History: Challenges and Opportunities

Introduction to the body of material and knowledge that forms the basis of the APHA History Project. This base includes the imposing body of articles contained in the Associations Journal- AJPH and its antecedents as well as the larger imposing body of scholarly work and media. A significant challenges is how to distil this vast body into a critical synthesis of public health past and present.

Learning Objectives:
Describe the magnitude and diversity of the historic literature and media .Explain the framework or the critical appraisal and approach of the History Project. Indicate use of comparative historical synthesis and its application to the APHA experience.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I will provide the prospective of my position as Contributing Editor (History) for the American Journal of Public Health with my focus on articles relating to public health history and its relevance to the Association. I also serve as an Advisor to the APHA History Project and hold a teaching research position as Professor of History at the University of Rochester
