Biographical Sketch: Barnett is the founder and executive director of Healthy Schools Network, a 50c3 not for profit environmental health organization founded in 1995, and a frequent adviser to federal and state agencies and NGOs. Since the Network’s founding, it has championed children’s health protections through advancing state policy and local practices for healthier, greener, sustainable schools, and for new environmental public health services for children in harm’s way, resulting in several national awards and recognitions. Under her leadership, the Network has fostered state-based reform coalitions in a dozen states, published two dozen user-friendly fact sheets for parents and others on avoiding school hazards, and shaped and won federal and state funds and laws to address the conditions of schools, including Sick Schools 2009, a national collaborative policy and data report with over 30 contributing organizations. Advancing the concept of green cleaning, Barnett directed a successful campaign that won a New York executive order and law for agencies and schools on using green products, updated third-party certifications standards for products, and spurred the formation of an “industry free, open source” collaborative working group and online toolkit on green cleaning. Prior to founding the Network and the national Coalition for Healthier Schools, she had 25 years experience in communications, local government, and nonprofit leadership. She is an active member of APHA’s Environment Section.
