Biographical Sketch: Alan Melnick, MD, MPH, CPH, is the Health Officer for Clackamas County, Oregon, population 360,000, and Associate Professor and Director of Research for the Department of Family Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Melnick is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and the Department of Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology at Oregon Health Science University. His research interests include community-based participatory research and geographic information system applications in public health. Since 1991, he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Oregon Conference of Local Health Officials, at present Vice-Chair, and is currently on the Board of the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). Dr. Melnick is a 1993-94 Scholar in the National Public Health Leadership Institute, past Chair of its alumni association, the Public Health Leadership Society (PHLS) and a member of the PHLS Council. In 2002, he published “Introduction to Geographic Information Systems in Public Health” (Jones and Bartlett publishers).
Dr. Melnick is a member of the Charter Class of Certified in Public Health (CPH). As Health Officer for Clark County, Washington, he says, "The CPH provides evidence that public health professional staff are committed to lifelong learning.
