Biographical Sketch:
Barbara Baquero, Ph.D, M.P.H Dr. Baquero earned her PhD in Public Health (Health Behavior) from San Diego State University and the University of California, San Diego, and obtained an MPH in Health Promotion from San Diego State University. Currently, Dr. Baquero is a W.K. Kellogg postdoctoral scholar at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, working on identifying and examining the social, cultural and structural determinants of chronic diseases using community-based participatory research approaches among recent Latino immigrants in North Carolina. Dr. Baquero’s body of research has centered on the development, implementation and evaluation of community-based health promotion and disease prevention methodologies targeting Latinos in Southern California. Recent research findings from her work with the residents of communities along the Southern California US-Mexico border reinforce emerging evidence of the importance of place and cultural indicators as factors when studying and developing interventions for Latino immigrants. Dr. Baquero’s current research expands upon this foundation to advance the design of interventions that address the cultural and contextual factors associated with chronic disease prevention and control among Latino immigrants to the US.
