Biographical Sketch: Dr. Mary Mitchell has a B.A. from Pennsylvania State University in Communications, a M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in Health Communications, and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in Public and Community Health. After finishing her Ph.D., she continued her studies in a
National Institute of Drug Abuse post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Mental Health at the Johns Hopkins University. After her post-doc, Dr. Mitchell was a non-tenure track faculty member in the department. She is
currently a Senior Epidemiologist at the Public Health Command in the Social & Behavioral Health Outcomes Program. During her educational and work experiences, she developed her ability to conduct latent variable modeling
analyses including factor analysis, latent class analysis, and structural equation modeling. She has focused her career on exploring the effects of psychosocial variables such as stress and social support on the well-being
of people who have experienced traumatic events or have suffered the trauma associated with living with a chronic illness such as HIV/AIDS.
