Transition and Support: Addressing Trauma and Mental Health Needs of Youth

Tuesday, November 5, 2013: 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM
Oral
This session will present research on topics related to the needs of youth in transition and youth with special mental healthcare needs. The presentations cover various aspects of providing healthcare support, from evaluating transition programs, predicting risk factors for mental health problems, and exploring the influence of relationships on mental health to proposing a trauma-informed model of treatment. These efforts all aim to maximize lifelong functioning, development, and health of youth by informing healthcare providers, parents, and the youth themselves.
Session Objectives: Discuss the association between depression and relationship satisfaction during pregnancy and postpartum among adolescents and young adults. Identify challenges and emotions of disabled youth transitioning from pediatric to adult care. Describe the need for a trauma-informed treatment model to address mental health issues experienced by delinquent adolescent females. Describe the correlation between PTSD and trauma exposures among transition-aged youth residing in supported community housing.
