Achieving Collective Public Health Impact: Building Bridges Between Funders and Community Coalitions

Monday, November 4, 2013: 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
Roundtable
One purpose of the 2013 APHA Annual Meeting is to address gaps in public health practitioners’ knowledge and performance, as well as to identify best practices in addressing general public health issues. By offering opportunities whereby the public health funding community can help to address these purposes, APHA will: help to define the funder/donors’ role in the larger public health sector, initiate cross sector education and planning, and ultimately create avenues that can bring best practices to the local level. The proposed session will discuss both the benefits and challenges of including public health funders when planning and implementing comprehensive, innovative, community-based efforts. It will highlight several national initiatives made possible only through funder/coalition partnerships, and facilitate discussion on what was learned and why public health funders need to work more closely within their communities while better sharing public health funding best practices with other grantmakers and donors. Session Plan: -Roundtable format with space for general seating during session and speaker introductions. -Each roundtable (4-5) will provide an example of a successful, ongoing funder/community collation partnership; table hosts (2-3) will represent both the foundation and the nonprofit partners. Agenda: -Welcome, introductory comments re purpose of session and goal to increase communications among public health funders (5 mins or 15 mins if Dr Benjamin is able to comment). -Each table provides brief introduction of their partnership and roundtable presenters. -Attendees break to tables. -Each table will address the following questions: 1. How and why was the collaborative formed? What conditions allowed this to happen? 2. What are the roles of the collaborative partners? 3. How is the collaborative benefiting its state? 4. What’s working and what did not? 5. What are the lessons learned from the collaborative? 6. What are the next steps for the collaborative? -Table rotations
Session Objectives: For Community Partners/non profits: Describe the benefits to having funders at the table early-on in a project planning process. Explain the processes involved in starting and maintaining collaborations with funders. Discuss how grantmakers can actively take part in local public health community efforts. For Funder/Donors: Define the benefits of involvement in local public health planning endeavors. Collectively explore ways to partner with public health-focused nonprofits, share work with other foundations, and communicate the need for collaboration to our boards. Identify methods by which grantmakers can share ideas and best practices that will increase our creativity, leverage our dollars and strengthen the practice of public health.
