Health in All Policies: Tools for embedding health in government decision-making

Tuesday, November 5, 2013: 2:30 PM - 4:00 PM
Oral
Health in All Policies is a collaborative approach to improving the health of all people by incorporating health considerations into decision-making across sectors and policy areas. Since 2010, California’s Health in All Policies Task Force has been working to use this approach to develop interagency policy solutions to promoting health and equity while helping agencies meet their own goals. The Public Health Institute provides technical assistance to local communities on the use of a Health in All Policies approach, and partners with the California Department of Public Health to facilitate the Health in All Policies Task Force. With support from the American Public Health Association and The California Endowment, the Public Health Institute has developed Health in All Policies: A Guide for State and Local Governments. The Guide includes lessons learned from state and local efforts, and describes structures, processes, and tools that could support similar efforts in other jurisdictions. This presentation will provide information based on the Guide, including tools for building long-term interagency partnerships, exercises to help participants get started using a Health in All Policies approach, methods for embedding health and equity into government processes, and examples of state and local uses of the Health in All Policies approach.
Session Objectives: 1.Describe Health in All Policies as a tool to promote the social determinants of health and health equity as well as core principles of Health in All Policies 2. List strategies for building mutual, reciprocal inter-agency partnerships to promote health 3. Identify tools that can be used to identify potential partners and develop common goals 4. Describe possible avenues for embedding health and equity into existing government processes 5. Share state and local case studies regarding the use of a Health in All Policies approach
