All We Are Saying Is Give Global Health A Chance

Monday, November 4, 2013: 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Oral
In 2012 we inaugurated an Intersectional Council session at the APHA Annual Meeting. That program focused on cross-section initiatives. This year, in keeping with the meeting theme, Think Global, Act Local, Best Practices Around the World, we want to explore what sections are doing in global health, and how might we promote some cross-sectional synergies, enabling APHA to have a greater global impact. As the International Health Section freely states, Global Health is not just the purview of their Section, AND global health problems occur here within the United States. What are our sections doing in global health? How are we or might we improve these efforts by working together? This session will begin with short presentations on the global health efforts of two sections, intended to stimulate small group discussions around articulating the global health needs within the US borders; ways in which sections might help one another do global health; identification of low cost interventions happening in developing countries that could be employed in the US, and other topics of interest.
Session Objectives: Discuss ways in which various APHA components and affiliates might coordinate/collaborate on global health projects within the US and abroad. Identify 2-3 global health issues occurring within the United States.
