Under Our Skin and Outside the Box: Implicit Bias, Health Inequity and Radical Reconstruction

Monday, November 4, 2013: 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
Oral
We have known for years that implicit bias operates on the individual level in the health care system. We have seen dramatic examples of disparate treatment based on race that seems to reflect such biases in individual practitioners. On the structural level, we have also come to recognize that there are powerful social determinants of health. This panel will explore the connections between implicit or unconscious bias and the structures – obvious and surprising -- that play such an important role in determining the health and well being of individuals and communities.
