The Future of American Global Health Professionals : Reflections

Monday, November 4, 2013: 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
Panel Discussion
This panel will share the current status of activities and the results of the "Summit on the Future of the American Global Health Professional," occurring September 5, 2013, in Washington DC. The Summit would have brought together key representatives of three segments of the global health industry: 1. The schools and universities who train, teach and prepare people coming into the field of global health 2. The non-profit, for-profit public and private sector companies and organizations who hire and in which many global health professionals implement their work 3. The donors and governments who fund the work and whose strategic vision influences the course of global health. Summit outcomes include: 1.An informal/formal network of multi-disciplinary professionals with overlapping interests who know each other and will more likely communicate on relevant issues, supported by the Global Health Fellows Program-II, the Global Health Council and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health. Another longer term outcome will be a set of 5-10 recommendations to help focus and guide and reflect the future of the global health professional. Two themes include: (1) Real world competencies that represent all three perspectives; and (2) Ways to ensure diversity of the American global health professional. The APHA panel will be a significant next step in this process. This meeting at APHA will be organized not as individual “papers” presented but as a discussion continuing from the Summit of the issues, challenges, strengths and recommendations - with audience participation. Next steps and an invitation to interested participants regarding how they might get involved will also be included in the session.
Session Objectives: Goals: 1. Participants will be able to list at least one key challenge for each of three domains relevant to American global health professional - the donor, academia, and the implementer. 2. Participants will be able to describe at least one next step they might personally take to contribute to the conversation.
