Family Violence and Automated Case Management Data Systems

Tuesday, November 5, 2013: 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM
Oral
Child maltreatment case management can be impaired by incomplete records. Experts and expert centers are expanded for evaluation but regular health care may not be available or known to investigators. This may include previous injuries and evidence of abuse and neglect. Reporting hospital records may be lost if investigators do not go beyond state report forms that do not include medical information. Multiagency Child Fatality Review may miss multiagency records. Friends, family and neighbors may not be interviewed. Records may be lost across jurisdictions. Some of this may never be connected but hospitals can add medical finding and help to find other. Medical records. The LA County Interagency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect, National Center on Child Fatality Review, ICAN NCFR, has projects underway with 130+ California Hospitals. Working groups by medical specialties include; 12 child burn units and 32 pediatric intensive care units statewide. Birth hospitals for LA County with 127,000 births are connected with plans to add birth hospitals statewide. The system is moving toward automation of child maltreatment reports with a data base for hospital to manage reports as a population.. The ICAN Child Death Review Teams adds automation with records from multiple agencies. Case examples, data systems and models will be explained. Hospital data and maps will demonstrate the network. Computer programs will be explained and demonstrated. Some models from other states will be described along with a national informal working group. As possible attendees may share their work.
