Public Policy Implications for Law Enforcement Officers

Tuesday, November 3, 2015

Sandra L. Ramey, PhD, RN, College of Nursing and College of Public Health, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA
This  paper submission explores the implications of public policy options supporting integrated health protection and promotion strategies on the development of the healthcare workforce. The two are often housed in completely distinct organizational divisions with health protection often residing in non-health oriented units and health promotion initiatives a function of human resources or benefits. These programs are usually run as distinct, separate activities, with minimal attempts at integration.

Educating students about community and public health includes enlightenment about how social changes and economic changes impact the workplace. In the USA, an example of this is found in the profession of law enforcement. Currently, police work in a climate of budget cuts with officers working harder and longer into their careers due to a reduced workforce. Historically, there has been an increased prevalence of cardiovascular disease within this profession. The National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA), which is orchestrated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has included in its sector classifications that law enforcement should reduce cardiovascular disease by 50% by 2015. It is impossible to meet this type of mandate without the partnership of law enforcement and healthcare professionals. It is intuitive to explore how academics involved in nursing and medicine can help service professionals improve their health and decease risk factors in the workplace.
