Guidelines and tools to organize data for reporting methods

Saturday, October 31, 2015 : 1:50 p.m. - 2:50 p.m.

Helena M. VonVille, MLS, MPH, Library, University of Texas School of Public Health, Houston, TX
Standards for reporting require that data from all database searches and non-database sources are tracked.  This includes search strategies, search results, internal duplicates, and external duplicates.  The data are used in the Identification section of the PRISMA flowchart.  It can be a daunting task as there are multiple elements to record for potentially thousands of citations.  This session will explore the use of citation management software for tracking individual citations.  We will also refer to various tools, both fee-based and free, to aid in organizing data.  A free Excel workbook that was designed specifically to provide a record of all database searches and results for systematic reviews will be demonstrated.  This workbook, when used properly, also provides the user with a PRISMA flowchart, tracking data from the very beginning searches all the way through the end of the full text review process.
