Building Rapport, Participant Recruitment, and Research Ethics

This session is designed to educate participants about ethical concerns in conducting qualitative research. We will discuss how to prepare and submit an application to an institutional review board.  Cite examples of approval and potential reasons for applications being denied by an institutional review board.  This session will assist participants in identifying opportunities to gain entrée and build rapport among populations.  How to sample and accomplish recruitment goals within the population will be described.  We will discuss the value and appropriate use of incentive provisions to study participants.

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have taken several courses in qualitative research methods in my master and doctoral programs. I have also conducted research using qualitative methods in a variety of settings and topics including HIV/AIDS, rural nutrition environments, and among youth. I have been involved in qualitative research projects at various phases - instrument development, data collection, data transcription, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.
