In 2010, the Institute of Medicine issued its landmark report: The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.   The report identified evidence-based recommendations for nursing practice, education, leadership, workforce diversity and interprofessional practice and education.  The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action focuses on implementation of the report’s recommendations.  Now the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation would like nurses, through the State Action Coalitions and its cohort of Public Health Nursing Leaders, to lead, with involvement and leadership of public health nurses, the implementation of a “culture of health” across America to improve the overall population’s health. 

This Session will highlight the progress to date in engaging public health nurses in State Action Coalitions and identifying strategies which, if implemented by all nurses regardless of their practice setting, could make the biggest difference in our nation’s health.  The activities and accomplishments of the Campaign for Action and its State Action Coalitions will be detailed, with an emphasis on how public health nurses have provided leadership.  The steps that public health nurses should take to further the implementation of a “culture of health” will be outlined.

Prior to this I served for 19+ years as Head of Public Health Nursing for the NC Division of Public Health, was Chair of the Quad Council of PHN Organizations 3 times and chaired or co-chaired the last 2 revisions of the Scope of Practice for PHN.
