For more than three decades, the Healthy People initiative has provided a comprehensive set of national 10-year health promotion and disease prevention objectives aimed at improving the health of all Americans. The latest iteration, Healthy People 2020 (HP2020), introduced the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) as one of the 42 topic areas for this decade in addition to being a guiding principle for one of the initiative’s overarching goals. The HP2020 SDOH topic area uses a five domain model, which includes the areas of Health and Health Care, Social and Community Context, Education, Economic Stability, and Neighborhood and Build Environment. This presentation will introduce the SDOH topic area, five domain model, and SDOH objectives, data, and associated progress and disparities with particular focus on data for women. The SDOH domain of economic stability includes an objective on the proportion of people living in poverty, an indicator which shows women at significantly higher rates than men. This presentation will conclude with the SDOH topic area’s approach to addressing the substantial disparities that women face in leading healthy lives.
