Haiyan Chen, MD, PhD, Dental Public Health, University of Maryland Dental School, Baltimore, MD
Background

Non-trivial portion of patients (1 out of 10) in a dental clinic were reported to use herbal and/or natural products. Yet, the rate remains unknown among the general United States adults with dental/oral conditions. This project investigate the rate using data from the 2007 National Health Interview Survey and the 2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey.

Methods

Use of herbal and/or natural products as the main outcome were measured as: ever use, used in the past 12 months, and used in the past 3 months. The dental/oral population was defined as if having at least one of the conditions with ICD 9 codes 520 through 529. Other independent variables included but not limited to age, gender, race/ethnicity, education, married status, health status, insurance, medical conditions, access to care, and medical care expenditure. Multiple multinomial regression models were used to assess the association of herbal and/or natural products use with dental/oral condition after controlling for the rest factors. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant in all tests. All analyses used SAS and SUDAAN software.

Results

In 2007, 12% adults with dental/oral conditions had used herbal and/or natural products in the past 12 months.

Discussion

The findings from this study that dental and medical patients use herbal and/or natural products concur with previous studies. It is important that practicing dentist be familiar with herb/drug interaction. Further studies can be done on cost-effect investigation.

Learning Areas:

Clinical medicine applied in public health
Epidemiology

Learning Objectives:
Describe percentage of use of herbal and/or natural products among U.S. adults with dental/oral conditions. Describe population characteristics of U.S. adults with dental/oral conditions who used herbal and/or natural products. List reasons to use herbal and/or natural products among U.S. adults with dental/oral conditions. Demonstrate data mining approach by linking the National Health Interview Survey and the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. Analyze survey data with a complex design using SAS and SUDAAN.
