Challenges and lessons learned in recruiting African American adolescents into a usability testing research for a smartphone app against dating violenceg

Purpose: Describe challenges and lessons learned in recruiting African American adolescents into a usability testing research for a smartphone app against dating violence
Methods: 19 African American adolescent were recruited to test the usability of a mobile app focused on dating violence by using a think aloud protocol. Participants also answered a short questionnaires, and individual interviews were audio-recorded. Participants were recruited from one metropolitan nursing center. Eligibility criteria included: aged 13-17 years; (b) experience using smartphones and apps; and (c) the ability to speak, read, and understand English. Strategies used to recruit potential participants included: (a) having a familiar staff member initially approach potential participants to legitimize the researcher and the study; (b) providing a brief letter and oral description introducing the study; (c) allowing a preferred means of contact (email or phone); (d) choosing a convenient time and working around their appointment schedule; (e) describing the African American adolescents as the expert on the topic; (f) sending study materials at least three days ahead of time; and (g) offering a gift card incentive.
Results: Recruitment strategies were well-received, resulting in an 85% participation rate.
Conclusions: The challenges and lesson learned from this study will provide insights into tailored strategies to be used future recruitment of African American adolescents.
