Issues:Despite the popularity of the adult entertainment industry, the commercialized sex industry continues to be stigmatized and negative attitudes towards female exotic dancers significantly impact their health and safety. Occupational health and safety policies have been unsuccessful in regulating the environment in which these women work.  Further, overall health status and occupational risks of exotic dancers have not been widely explored.  To fill these gaps, this study aimed to identify physical and social risks associated with exotic dancing.

Description:This occupational needs assessment took a multi-method approach employing electronic questionnaires via an online exotic dancer community, content analysis of topics discussed on the forum, and multiple field observations of exotic dancing-establishments.  Participants included women 18 and older with exotic dancing experience.

Lessons learned:Participants identified access to health services, including mental health, as a health priority. Few women had health insurance and most were unable to access these services. Dancers ranked safety and security as the greatest concern to their health, followed by alcohol consumption and second hand smoke. Fear of harassment, violence and negative perceptions of the profession were also indicated as risks to wellbeing.

Recommendations:All women, regardless of their profession, should be afforded the opportunity to work in a safe and healthy environment. Thus, directing attention toward the health needs of exotic dancers to influence policy change and encouraging safer working conditions is vital. Implementing programs driven by exotic dancers’ unique perspectives and strengthening regulations will ensure the safety and wellbeing while reducing existing disparities.

Presenting author's disclosure statement:

Qualified on the content I am responsible for because: I have been a co-author on this project since its inception in January 2014. I have held previous positions working in different aspects of women’s health under state funded programs. Such programs focused on addressing psycho-social and sexual health concerns among women in undeserved populations. Therefore my previous professional and educational experience on diverse women’s health issues have adequately qualified me to present findings obtained through this assessment.
