In partnership with local public health officials, the Rutgers School of Public Health, a NIEHS WTP grantee, began a Personal Protective Equipment train-the-trainer program for Ebola preparedness in late 2014. Rutgers SPH developed training materials to prepare EMS, Police, Fire and public health professional to don and off PPE for Ebola response activities. Rutgers and partners deployed to deliver this unique ‘train the trainer’ course to more than 250 health care professionals.  Training discussed Ebola basics in didactic session and included an emphasis on hands on don/doff activities. Participants were not only trained to don/doff PPE but completed the course able to train co-workers to don/doff needed PPE.

This presentation will explore challenges that arose in developing a large-scale Ebola training program in a politically sensitive environment and will identify training elements that have been successful.  Discussion of the differing PPE needs required of healthcare workers will be covered and methods for adapting training to these needs described.
