Wednesday, November 4, 2015 : 1:10 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Carol Dolan, PhD, Community Health Sciences, Boston University School of Public Health, Boston, MA
Kelly Royce, MPH, Boston University School of Public Health
Background/Purpose: Global rates of premature mortality and disability from mental illness clearly demonstrate the need for an interdisciplinary approach to preventing and addressing mental health issues. Public health professionals can play a key role in this approach; however, it is essential that mental health and related issues are embedded in comprehensive Public Health education and career development. The aim of this project is to assess and evaluate the curricular, research and professional development opportunities available to students at the Boston University School of Public Health who are interested in pursuing a career at the intersection of Mental Health and Public Health.

Methods:  Assessment includes 1) a systematic review of currently offered courses for their MH content, 2) identification of faculty members whose research includes a PH MH component, 3) coordination with the school’s career services, practice office, and alumni office to identify organizations whose work combines MH and Public Health.
Evaluation of the project will 1) analyze the Boston University School of Public Health educational competencies related to mental health in the training of public health students, 2) identify gaps in current education and professional development opportunities in this area, and 3) formulate suggestions for addressing the gaps based on current trends in Public Health education.

Findings/Implications:  We anticipate that this assessment and evaluation will have important implications for student professional education and training, curriculum development, enhancement of community and Boston University School of Public Health connections, and understanding of how mental health fits into a Public Health curriculum.
