American Indian and Alaska Native men's use of sexual and reproductive health services: An analysis of NSFG data

American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) men experience higher rates of STIs and HIV than non-Hispanic whites (NHWs). Additionally, teen AIAN males are three times as likely as NHWs to report having impregnated a woman. To address and hopefully reduce these disparities, AIAN men are in need of sexual and reproductive health services, including STI counseling, testing, and treatment, and birth control counseling and method provision. Although previous research has examined use of sexual and reproductive health services among minority men, AIAN men’s use of services has never been studied. In this cross-sectional study we compare AIAN men’s use of sexual and reproductive health services (e.g. STI and HIV testing, birth control counseling) to men of other racial groups as well as on variables hypothesized to influence the use of services (e.g. age, poverty status, insurance coverage, rurality, and number of sexual partners). Data come from the 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth restricted use files (total n=10,403, AIAN n=923). Preliminary analyses suggest that few AIAN men (<10%) in the sample were eligible for services paid for by the Indian Health Service. Results from multivariate analysis, including regional and socioeconomic differences, will be presented and implications for the development of programs and policies to address the sexual and reproductive health of AIAN men will be discussed.
