Although the social and health impacts of mega sporting events are under current debate, few empirical studies have been conducted to evaluate these issues.  Against the background of the rising costs associated with hosting mega sporting events, potential (beneficial) social and health impacts need also be considered and incorporated into decision making. To date, no scales have been developed which measure health as an overall construct. The aim of the current study was to test the applicability of the WHOQOL-BREF instrument within the context of the FIFA World Cup that took place in Brazil in 2014. The WHOQOL-BREF measures quality of life in four domains (physical, psychological, social and environmental health). A standardized online questionnaire was created and distributed by a Brazilian market research institute to adults (≥ 18 years) living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (n=498). The study sample obtained was randomly divided using the split half method. Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted for both samples using Mplus 7.0. The original four-factor solution achieved acceptable model fit after deleting items which did not fit empirically (e.g. low factor loadings, high loading on more than one factor, high correlation) or in terms of content. The model fit was higher when compared to solutions with more or less dimensions. In conclusion, the modified version of the WHOQOL-BREF is a valid measure that can be used in the context of the FIFA World Cup in the Brazilian host population.
