A Case for Social Media to Increase Community Engagement in Health-Related Research
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an overview of lessons learned from the development of a SM platform to increase community-engaged research (CEnR).
Methods: Mayo Clinic Office for Community Engagement in Research and the Center for Social Media developed a SM strategic plan to increase CEnR in clinical and translational science. In 2014, the plan involved the creation of an interactive blog and Twitter page to increase knowledge and awareness of CEnR. Data from the SM platform includes analytics on the blog and trends related to the Twitter account.
Results: To date the CEnR blog has 47 posts related to research education, dissemination, and benefits. Analytics from Tweeter includes 339 tweets, average engagement with other users is 104.9 with the engagement rate of 0.02, average duplicate tweets is 0.33, and the average favorites is 0.55. Additionally, Twitter served as mechanism to learners to enroll in online CEnR courses (n=45).
Conclusion: SM served as a podium to expand ideas and knowledge on CEnR allowing us to make engagement the norm at all stages of clinical and translational science. Success from this project is the level of interaction of diverse stakeholders across multiple SM platforms.
