People over 65 years of age represented 13.3% of the population in the year 2011, but are expected to grow to 21% of the population by 2040. It is imperative that all sectors of society collaborate to ensure positive health for this growing population. In this session, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), will describe how state public health agencies work across sectors to take a comprehensive approach to improve the health of older adults and their communities. Working with state public health agencies and partners across all sectors ASTHO developed Menu of Strategies based on national guidelines, policies, and recommendations around healthy aging for their members and their partners to implement. Additionally, ASTHO convened a five state learning community focused on working across sectors to promote/implement policies that support healthy aging. The states exchange ideas, learning from one another and other national experts around building an infrastructure to promote the health of older adults. ASTHO also supported a caregiver systematic review focused on policy/systems-level interventions to support caregivers of older adults. ASTHO also convened a meeting of federal and organizational partners to discuss areas of overlap in healthy aging, public health, and the National Prevention Strategy, and identify opportunities for collaboration moving forward. The session will discuss some of our lessons learned around the keys to successful public health and healthy aging network collaboration and initiatives that are making a difference in states and across the country.
