Social Justice: Interconnectedness of Social Systems, Policies, and Health

Monday, November 2, 2015 : 11:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Wrenetha Julion, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, Women, Children & Family Nursing, Rush University, College of Nursing, Chicago, IL

The Diversity and Social Justice Committee of the Public Health Nursing Section of the American Public Health Association recognizes that social systems and policies affect health. The interconnectedness of race, gender, income, social support, family structure, and policies result in social injustices and broad structural inequities have a significant effect on the health of our nation. These factors have contributed to fractured communities, inadequate and unequal opportunities with consequent poor health outcomes. The men, women, and children that comprise these disenfranchised groups are unfairly victimized and blamed for the structural and systemic racism that rips apart families, neighborhoods, and communities.  The resultant inadequate social, economic, educational, and health systems place these groups at greater health risk and destroy the dreams and aspirations of millions.  These communities are toxic to the physical, mental, and spiritual health of its residents.

Our speakers will discuss the interconnectedness of social systems, organizational policies, economics, laws, and subsequent injustices.  Reform at national and local levels is crucial despite many public policy challenges. Successful programs to foster social justice in this arena will be addressed and the role of public health in this endeavor will be examined.
