Building a Culture of Health: The Role of Foundations in Community Development and Health

Tuesday, November 3, 2015 : 2:45 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Donald Schwarz, MD, MPH, MBA, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Princeton, NJ

Since 2010, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has partnered with regional Federal Reserve offices to host a series of convenings bringing together non-profit community developers and community development finance institutions with health care and public health leaders. At the heart of this initiative has been the recognition of the vital role that place – neighborhood – plays in health outcomes. Through this work and through strategic funding of research, network building, and the Foundation’s 2014 Commission to Build a Healthier America report, RWJF has played an active role in fostering innovative community development that improves community health and well-being by addressing the social determinants of health. In this presentation, I discuss how RWJF has engaged with both the community development and the health sectors to catalyze and support this innovative work.
