Cher* the Road: A Creative Approach to Promoting Transportation Safety and Complete Streets

Monday, November 2, 2015 : 10:06 a.m. - 10:07 a.m.

Allison Wilson, MPH, YMCA/Healthy Living Alliance, Springfield, MO
To aid programmatic efforts in proper bike safety and also exhibit the benefits of a complete streets policy, we produced this commercial. The need for this message was found on various blogs, social media outlets, and bike and car collision reports from Springfield, Missouri. The current trend from this data was that drivers and bikers do not get along and do not know the proper rules of the road. Thus, an important factor of the video was to show the responsibility for both bikers and car drivers in sharing the road. This video was done outside of the usual health education verbage and look, to reach a wider audience - anyone that bikes and/or drives in Springfield, Missouri (ranging from 16 - 70 years). A local Cher impersonator was used as well as local actors to drive home the message. This video aired on TV with both paid and earned media time, and also was successful in reaching over 10,000 views on social media.

Learning Areas:

Implementation of health education strategies, interventions and programs
