Introduction: "Epidemiology across the Americas: Bringing Together Latin American, Caribbean, and North American Epidemiologists – a panel discussion"

Monday, November 2, 2015 : 12:30 p.m. - 12:35 p.m.

Nancy Krieger, PhD, Dept of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Boston, MA
Howell Sasser, PhD MPH, St Paul's Episcopal Church, Bloomsburg, PA
Our session aims to introduce North American public health workers to the creative conceptual and empirical epidemiological work taking place in the many countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as encourage greater and more equitable collaboration among epidemiologists across the Americas. After a brief introduction by session co-moderators, the IEA Regional Councilor for North America (US: N Krieger), and the Chair of the APHA Epidemiology Section (US; H Sasser), there will be two brief formal presentations about: (1) the status of epidemiology in diverse Latin American & Caribbean countries (Rita Barradas Barata & Cesar Victora; Brazil) and (2) plans to make the 2016 Epidemiology Congress of the Americas (June 2-24, 2016, in Miami, FL) be a meeting that is truly inclusive of all the countries of the Americas (Mauricio Barreto; Brazil). We then will have an hour-long panel discussion that will include epidemiologists from the Caribbean (Affete McCaw-Binns, Jamaica; Jorge Bacallo, Cuba) and from Latin America (Marcio Alazraqui, Argentina; Marion Piñeros Petersen, Colombia & IARC; Helia Molina Milman, Chile; Rita Barradas Barata, Brazil; Mauricio Barreto, Brazil). Together they will share their views about: (a) critical issues, including health inequities, facing epidemiologists within and across their countries and regions, and (b) challenges and opportunities for building equitable inter-regional collaborations that extend across the Americas. To continue the discussion after the session is over, we will have a special reception at 6 pm (on the same day as the session) to give everyone a change to mingle, talk, and have fun!
