Strategies for addressing EHS policy issues at the regional level

Monday, November 2, 2015 : 8:30 a.m. - 8:50 a.m.

David Osterberg, MS, MA, School of Public Health, University of Iowa School of Public Health, Iowa City, IA
Since 2007, Professor Osterberg and his team at the University of Iowa have convened workshops for state legislators in five Midwestern cities, co-sponsored by the National Conference of State Legislatures. Osterberg will discuss development and implementation of these workshops, which drew over 80 state policy makers to discuss environmental health issues such as radon and indoor air contamination, PCBs in schools, hydraulic fracturing, animal feeding operations, renewable energy and climate change. Many legislators stated that these workshops gave them new insights into environmental health topics of concern to Midwestern populations. One legislator made the point that these issues are inter-state concerns and that this forum provided an opportunity to work together as a region on the environmental health issues that are relevant to all Midwestern states. The legislators also recommended this format for research translation and outreach and education in all the centers within the Superfund Basic Research Program. Mr. Osterberg will discuss his experience in creating environmental health workshops that provide evidence-based research results for policy makers on issues of environmental health.
