State of epidemiology in Argentina and an experience in epidemiological training and cooperation involving Argentina, Guatemala and the US

Monday, November 2, 2015 : 1:05 p.m. - 1:10 p.m.

Marcio Alazraqui, Departamento de Salud Comunitaria, Universidad Nacional de Lanus, Lanus, Argentina
The need to develop epidemiology in the Latin American region was highlighted in Seminars on the Use and Perspectives of Epidemiology organized by the Pan American Health Organization in Buenos Aires in 1983. Since then, there has been heterogeneous development among countries in the region. In Argentina such development has been limited to epidemiological surveillance of communicable diseases and clinical epidemiology (with strong external collaboration). It is necessary to increase the development of: a) a populational approach to chronic diseases and violence, as well as to the social determinants of these health problems (including the study of health inequalities); b) the evaluation and monitoring of health programs and policies; c) a concept of surveillance not limited to disease. Inter-regional collaboration should take into account the perspective of “Epidemiology for Collective Health,” simultaneously incorporated into: a) the production of original knowledge regarding the health-disease-care process in populations; and b) the specific professional field that works, along with other professions, towards improving the level of health of the population. Since 2013, we have participated in a collaborative experience involving Argentina (National University of Lanús), Guatemala (Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama) and the US (University of Michigan) through a NIH Fogarty Grant that allows for the training of epidemiologists in multilevel and life course analysis for the prevention of non-communicable disease.
