In 2007, the NYC Health Department amended the Health Code to increase standards for physical activity in group childcare centers, requiring 60 minutes of physical activity per day for children aged 12 months or older, regardless of weather or space. To increase compliance, the Health Department began a rigorous teacher training schedule, particularly in high poverty neighborhoods. One evaluation showed longer hours of operation and more children per class inhibited compliance while dedicated outdoor space and staff trainings increased it. This presentation will describe the regulation, its implementation, and key findings from two periods of post-evaluation data.
