Tuesday, November 3, 2015 : 2:50 p.m. - 3:10 p.m.

William Maas, DDS, MPH, Children's Dental Policy, The Pew Charitable Trusts, North Bethesda, MD

Matthew Crespin, MPH, RDH, Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, WI

School-based dental sealant programs are an evidence-based strategy for decreasing caries among low-income children. Yet, despite the scientific evidence of their value and government recommendations for their wide-scale implementation, formidable barriers – including regulatory, legislative and financing—work against their use. Speakers at this seminar will present highlights from a new study released by the Pew Charitable Trusts that grades all 50 states on their policies and practices that promote children’s access to sealants. A public health program director and state dental association official will discuss successful strategies in their states for expanding school-based sealant programs. Discussion will also include suggestion of how school-based sealant programs could be far more effective in preventing and controlling dental disease if they were to allow dental hygienists to provide temporary fillings to children with cavities.

Learning Areas:

Assessment of individual and community needs for health education
Program planning
Public health administration or related administration

Learning Objectives:
Describe state performance on providing sealants to children in schools, as well as policies and practices that both enhance and hinder sealant placement. Identify potential for school-based sealant programs to maximize their effectiveness and fight dental disease by allowing hygienists to provide temporary fillings for children who need them.
