Community Water Fluoridation: Current Challenges and Future Opportunities

The National Fluoridation Advisory Committee of the American Dental Association gathers fluoridation data from dentist members, state and local dental societies, oral health coalitions, state dental directors and other fluoridation collaborators. Additional information is obtained through Internet alert systems, news sources, Websites and Facebook pages (including those philosophically opposed to fluoridation.) The data are reviewed in detail so that summarizing activity, votes, outcomes and trends related to community water fluoridation can be used to assist those on the front lines of this critically needed public health measure. Future challenges to water fluoridation can be expected but opportunities exist to extend the benefits of fluoridation and meet the Healthy People 2020 Objective through effective campaign strategies.
