Healthcare Financing of Healthy Homes Services: The evidence base and national landscape

Tuesday, November 3, 2015 : 8:30 a.m. - 8:50 a.m.

Amanda Reddy, MS, National Center for Healthy Housing, Columbia, MD
Over two decades of research and evaluation have provided a strong evidence-base for housing-based interventions, including home-based asthma services and lead poisoning follow-up services. However, widespread implementation of these services has been limited, in part, by a lack of coverage and integration with the healthcare sector. In the spring of 2014, the National Center for Healthy Housing conducted a nationwide survey to identify states where healthcare financing for lead poisoning follow-up or home-based asthma services is already in place or pending.  A review of the evidence for housing, health and cost outcomes will be presented along with findings from the 2014 survey to characterize the national landscape. There will be an emphasis on state Medicaid policies, but coverage through private insurers, ACOs, hospital community benefit programs and other healthcare financing options will also be discussed.
