Valuable Role of Higher Education in Addressing Climate Change

Tuesday, November 3, 2015 : 1:00 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.

Howard Frumkin, MD, DrPH, School of Public Health, University of Washington, Seattle, WA

Higher education has many contributions to make to addressing climate change and health, in ways that are consistent with the three missions of universities: teaching, research, and service.  Cutting across these missions is a fourth arena, university operations, as universities are large physical plants with large, and potentially reducible, carbon footprints.  This presentation will describe activities in the higher education sector, including research, pedagogy, service, and operations, with a special emphasis on the health sciences, and using examples from the University of Washington, consistently ranked one of the nation’s greenest universities.
