Oral
Healthy People 2020 marks the fourth iteration of this national initiative to monitor the health of the nation. One of the goals of Healthy People 2020 is to reduce health disparities and achieve health equity for all Americans. Oral Health is one of 42 topic areas within this national framework. This session will focus on highlighting four (4) topic areas, oral health (periodontal), oral cancer, tobacco use and obesity. The Oral Cancer and Tobacco Use topic areas have objectives related to oral health. This session would focus on the oral health related objectives and efforts to collaborate across these topics areas. In addition, the progress of each objective toward its HP 2020 would be discussed. Tobacco use has two objectives—focusing on tobacco screening and tobacco cessation counseling in dental care settings.
Session Objectives: Describe how the oral health topic area collaborates with the tobacco use and oral cancer topic areas on oral health related objectives. Describe the progress of these oral health related objectives. Describe how a state program approached reducing disparities related to oral health and obesity using HP 2020 as a platform Identify at least two key strategies that the topic areas use to reduce disparities related to the highlighted objectives.
