Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview: The purpose of the Global Health Institute is to help students, emerging professionals, mid and senior career changers to make strategic and informed career plans related to global health careers. The American Public Health Association conducted a needs assessment survey and identified a gap in public health professionals’ competencies regarding global health practice strategies. Multiple short presentations and interactive exercises will provide participants with information on what working in an international setting entails. In the session, participants will hear what the large trends are in global health. They will receive the latest information regarding the “business” of global health and the most current hiring patterns. Through fun and interesting interactive exercises they will explore several critical competencies and will have time during the event to explore their own career paths and next steps – no matter where they are in their careers. This course dovetails nicely with the Annual Meeting theme of, Health in all Policies, recognizing that the public health workforce needs to be competent to address the needs of the public whether located in the US or abroad. Participants will be exposed to the fundamentals of the global health industry, and uncover how to effectively use their newly honed skill set to be an effective component of the global public health workforce. Overall this course combines experiential training with application of skills to help public health professionals acquire the expertise and knowledge to strengthen public health practice.
Session Objectives: Discuss key competencies necessary to be a successful global health professional. Describe the complex and connected components of Global Health realities. Demonstrate the ability to take at least one specific next step towards a career in global health.
