Background: The World Health Organization defines social determinants of health as the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. These circumstances are shaped by power, money, and distribution of resources. Project Brotherhood defines health as mental, physical, social, spiritual and economical. The research will look at the knowledge, attitude and beliefs of inner city youth from Chicago surrounding the social determinants of health. Using evidence based survey instruments and focus groups as a guide. Through this research we will identify the necessity for specifically structured, and strategic interventions addressing the mental, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual health of those affected by social determinants of health. Method: Centered on the community based participatory research model Project Brotherhood will develop interventions as well as culturally adapt evidence based interventions that will address the mental, physical, emotional, economic and spiritual needs of youth in Chicago in which social determinants have an impact on their well being. Project Brotherhood will conduct focus groups and distribute validated surveys to youth ages 14-18 in Chicago. Conclusion: Using the community based participatory research model, Project Brotherhood will develop interventions and culturally adapt evidence based interventions that will address the social determinants of health in youth ages 14-18 in Chicago. Learning Objectives: 1. Describe recruitment strategy for youth. 2. Use evidence based surveys to develop methodologies for interventions. 3. Results of focus groups and survey analysis used to identify thoughts of inner city youth surrounding social determinants of health.
